What are the benefits of porcelain veneers? | Dr. John Cranham

With the many advances in modern cosmetic dentistry, there are now many options for dental patients desiring everything from a subtle change to a complete smile makeover! One of the most popular options are porcelain veneers.

Dr. John Cranham, a nationally recognized cosmetic and restorative dentist in Chesapeake, VA, offers patients a variety of dental veneers, including porcelain veneers, as a cosmetic option for those seeking a change to their smile as well as to treat a variety of dental problems:

  • Close spaces between teeth
  • Improve the appearance of crooked teeth
  • Repair chipped or broken teeth
  • Cover stained or discolored teeth

While composite veneers are removable veneers that are attached directly to the tooth, porcelain veneers are permanent and can last for many years with proper oral hygiene, including regular preventive care visits to Dr. Cranham for thorough dental cleanings and exams. Porcelain veneers are made from a strong, translucent material and both appear and function just like a natural tooth. They are highly stain resistant, offering years of bright, white smiles!

Dr. Cranham will perform a thorough exam and recommend the best treatment option to suit a patient’s oral health needs, their personal goals and their budget. The porcelain veneer procedure involves several steps and may take place during several visits to Dr. Cranham.

The process will begin with treatment planning and Dr. Cranham will explain the details of each stage of the procedure, including results and what to expect. The tooth, or teeth, will be prepared during the first visit and a temporary veneer will be placed while a custom fit veneer is being created by a dental lab. The final step, placing the veneer by bonding it permanently to the tooth, will take place during the final visit. The new veneers will be color matched to a patient’s teeth for a beautiful, natural appearance.

Dr. Cranham will advise patients on proper long term care for their new veneers and recommend a night guard for protection if teeth grinding is an issue.

Are dental implants right for me? | Dr. John Cranham, DDS

One of the most important additions to the field of dentistry has been implant dentistry. Dental implants can provide patients who have lost a tooth, or several teeth, with a natural looking and functioning prosthetic tooth that will last for many years with good oral hygiene.

Dr. John Cranham, a cosmetic dentist in Chesapeake, VA, offers dental implants and has extensive experience and education which enables him to offer his patients exceptional dental care and comfortable, long lasting results. Dr. Cranham has incorporated leading dental technology into his Chesapeake dental practice which has many benefits for patients who come in for a dental procedure as well as regular preventive care visits.

For patients who have a missing tooth, Dr. Cranham will perform a thorough evaluation to determine if they are a candidate for dental implants. Patients must be generally healthy and have enough jaw bone to support the implantation of the tiny titanium post that will serve as the anchor for their new tooth. Dr. Cranham uses Cone Beam Computerized Tomography (CBCT) to create 3-D images of a patients jaw. This enable him to both ensure that the jaw is healthy enough to support implants and to determine the ideal placement for optimal results.

Dental implants are a multi step process, the initial step being the surgical placement of the titanium screw. The jaw will need 3-6 months after oral surgery to heal and fuse with the jaw bone. During this time, patients will be fitted with a temporary tooth so they can return to their daily routine and function normally.

Once the jaw is healed, Dr. Cranham will place the custom made crown on the post, or secure a bridge or denture to the post if multiple teeth are being replaced and anchored with a dental implant.

Dr. Cranham is a nationally recognized dentist in the fields of cosmetic and restorative dentistry and his patients benefit from his state of the art facility in Chesapeake as well as his knowledge of cutting edge dentistry.

Invisalign can treat a variety of dental problems! | Dr. John Cranham, DDS

Metal braces are what usually come to mind when most people think of orthodontic treatment as this was the industry standard for many years. Invisalign clear retainers offer patients of ALL ages the opportunity to treat a variety of dental problems, including cosmetic concerns, with clear, removable retainers. Invisalign offers patients the benefit of treatment that is truly “invisible”!

While young patients and teens appreciate the convenience of Invisalign, adult patients who either need or desire orthodontic treatment really love being able to use braces that are invisible!

Dr. John Cranham, DDS, an Invisalign dentist in Chesapeake, VA, recommends the use of this clear retainer system when appropriate because of its many benefits, including being able to maintain good oral hygiene during treatment because the retainers can be removed for brushing and flossing each day. No more food particles being lodged between or behind metal braces! This also helps to prevent tooth discoloration and the development of oral health issues such as gum disease.

Dr. Cranham recommends Invisalign to his Chesapeake area patients for a variety of dental health issues:

  • Tooth crowding
  • Spaces between teeth
  • Narrow tooth arches
  • Underbite or overbite
  • Crossbite

Orthodontic treatment has the best chance of being a success when the patient is committed and adheres to the care prescribed by Dr. Cranham, including dietary restrictions, which is required with traditional metal braces. Invisalign patients will find it easy to follow the treatment plan due to the ease and comfort with which the clear retainers can be removed for cleaning, dental visits and changing into the next retainer. This can be especially important for younger patients who may not be as enthusiastic about orthodontic treatment! In addition, Invisalign retainers will not irritate the soft tissues of the mouth, a common problem for patients using metal braces- especially young patients.

If you are considering orthodontic treatment for any reason, contact Dr. Cranham in his Chesapeake dental office to schedule an appointment and discuss your options.

Teeth Whitening Will Improve Your Smile

Your teeth may be healthy and straight, but your smile is lacking if teeth are discolored.
The foods you eat, and the beverages you drink plus other daily habits can stain your teeth over time, even if you brush regularly. Teeth whitening are the simple solution. Your smile is one of the first things people notice about you, and you will want to make a good impression.

Some people try to whiten their teeth on their own, but this may not give you the results you need and want. Over-the-counter products are messy, usually take many applications and do not provide the optimal whitening that professional bleaching can offer. In addition, mouth and gum irritation is very common after using over-the-counter whiteners.

If you are getting ready for an important date, a wedding, a photo shoot, a job interview or any other occasion when you want to look your best, you will want results fast. This is why Dr. Cranham offers a quick smile makeover.

During this procedure, you will sit back and relax as a quick-acting bleaching gel is carefully applied to your teeth. After the gel has been applied, your teeth will be exposed to a special light, which works with the bleaching agent to whiten your teeth. In only an hour, your teeth will be several shades lighter.

In addition to this ultra-fast bleaching service, you will receive a custom mouth tray and whitening gel to take home. This can be used when your teeth start to lose their brightness, preventing the need to go through the in-office procedure as often.

Those who are not in a hurry for a quick, dramatic change may forego the quick smile makeover and simply schedule a visit for the custom-fit whitening tray and accompanying, professional strength bleaching gel.

Call Dr. Cranham to set up you appointment. The office is conveniently located at 1207 Volvo Parkway, Suite 200 Chesapeake, Virginia 23320.

Dental Implants

Though most patients love the results of their dental implants, it’s a long procedure and can be costly. The patient should check to see if their health insurance covers it, as it may be considered an elective procedure. They should also consult with their dentist about possible financial aid or an installment plan.

The patient also needs to know if they’re a good candidate for the dental implant. They must have enough healthy gum tissue and bone in their jaw to hold the implant properly. If they don’t, but still insist on an implant, they must be willing to undergo bone or tissue grafts. They have to know that the procedure will take time and commitment on their part and should be willing to follow the dentist’s instructions.

During the procedure the dental surgeon implants a titanium post in the patient’s jaw. The bone will then take time to grow around the post and anchor it. This process takes some months and in the meantime the patient is instructed by the dentist as to the best way to care for their mouth while the bone and tissue are healing around the post. In the meantime a temporary crown will be placed for cosmetic reasons and so the patient can eat properly. Because the crown is only temporary, the patient will be asked to eat a soft diet.

After the post has been fused it’s uncovered and an attachment is placed to make an anchor for the crown. The crown has been formed in a dental lab and matches the size, shape and color of the patient’s other teeth precisely. While this used to be done according to the aesthetic considerations of the dentist, it’s now done by computer. Only the patient and their dentist will need to know that the implant isn’t a real tooth.

During the procedure the patient is given anesthesia to make them comfortable. Afterwards the patient will need to take care of the implant like they would their natural teeth, which means daily brushing and flossing. The dentist might also prescribe a special mouthwash for a time, or a special type of brush to clean the implant.

Getting a Dazzling Smile With Cosmetic Dentistry

Nothing makes a person feel more confident than a bright and beautiful smile that they can show to the world. There are a wide variety of options that a dentist experienced in cosmetic dentistry can offer to their patients. Teeth whitening is one of the most popular choices for those who have teeth that aren’t as white as they wish them to be. There are several methods used for teeth whitening, each of which are easy and painless to get a bright, gleaming white smile. Zoom whitening is done in a dentist’s office in an hour or less. Kits that can be taken home are also available and work beautifully to whiten even the dullest teeth.

Those who suffer from teeth that are crooked, cracked, or who have a gap that they wish to eliminate will benefit from porcelain veneers. Veneers are applied to each individual tooth, giving each tooth a new shape for a straight and beautiful smile. Veneers take several weeks to complete the entire process, but those who wish to have beautiful white teeth will love the results that they see. Cosmetic bonding is also an option that helps correct flawed teeth by applying and sculpting resin to help with gaps, chips, and discoloration.

For those who have lost a tooth or several, dental implants are a type of cosmetic procedure that replaces the missing teeth. Dental implants are long term and function the same way as regular teeth. This procedure is considered to be the best and most successful method for replacing missing teeth.

No matter what a patient’s dental problems are, a cosmetic dentist can work with them to find the options that are right for them. When working with an experienced cosmetic dentist, anyone can have a smile that they are proud to show off every time they flash a smile.

Patient Testimonials

Dental Implants are Beneficial and Make Your Smile Beautiful

There are few things more depressing than not being able to chew properly because of a missing tooth. Even more saddening is the odd looks that you might get when you have large gaps in your smile. Fortunately, there is away to permanently fill in the gaps in your smile using dental implants.

Dental implants are used to substitute the roots of missing teeth. Once they are established, the dentist can use them as anchors for replacement teeth or a crown.

Benefits to oral health

Dental implants are not only necessary for improving the quality of life right now, but are also necessary for preventing further damage to the teeth. Spaces in your smile can increase the chances that you experience tooth decay or gum disease. These conditions can lead to more lost teeth and can also make it more possible that the surviving teeth are knocked out of alignment. This can create larger and more expensive dental problems down the road.

Comfort and convenience

Dental implants fuse with the bone. This makes the dental implant permanent and also more natural-looking. Dentures can slip around in the mouth and even fall out, which can interfere with your ability to speak. Many patients feel that they have more confidence when they have dental implants.

Dental implants are also much more comfortable than dentures. They are like your real teeth and will remain in your mouth for your entire life if you take good care of them. Teeth that are not reduced are much more likely to last.

With other options, such as bridges, the tooth must be reduced to an extent in order for the bridge to fit. However, dental implants allow for the nearby teeth to be kept intact.

Suitable for most patients

Implants can be used with any patient. However, they are the most suited for patients who are not able to wear removable dentures. The dentist will inspect your mouth to make sure that you are the right candidate for a dental implant.
